Dr. Surinder Kumar Vasal – The Visionary Behind Quality Protein Maize & Padma Shri Awardee
India has long been home to legendary scientists whose innovations have uplifted not only the nation but the world. One such name that deserves spotlight is Dr. Surinder Kumar Vasal, a renowned Indian geneticist and plant breeder, most celebrated for his pioneering contribution to the development of Quality Protein Maize (QPM).
Born on April 12, 1938, in Amritsar, Punjab, Dr. Vasal began his academic journey at Khalsa College, Amritsar, and later completed his M.Sc. from Kanpur Agricultural College. He earned his Ph.D. in Genetics and Plant Breeding from the prestigious Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, in 1966. His dedication to science also took him abroad as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at CIMMYT, Mexico, in 1970.
Dr. Vasal began his career with the Department of Agriculture, Himachal Pradesh, and went on to work internationally, including with the Rockefeller Foundation in Thailand. However, his most impactful contributions came during his time at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), Mexico.
Working alongside Dr. Evangelina Villegas, Dr. Vasal co-developed Quality Protein Maize—a revolutionary maize variety enriched with essential amino acids like lysine and tryptophan. These nutrients made maize far more nutritious, helping combat malnutrition across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Thanks to their work, millions of children and families now have access to a healthier staple food.
For his outstanding work, Dr. Vasal received numerous accolades including:

• International Service in Crop Science Award (1996)
• Premio Cesar Garza Award from Mexico (1993)
• Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award by TAAS
In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to agricultural science and global food security, the Government of India conferred upon him the Padma Shri award under the Science and Engineering category.
