Higher studies after BSc Agriculture

Higher studies is one of the most chosen paths after BSc Agriculture, and it broadly covers three routes — MSc, MBA, and Abroad Studies. Your choice here should be based on where you see yourself in the next 5–10 years.

If you are passionate about learning, research, innovation, or teaching, pursuing higher education is an excellent choice. You can continue with M.Sc. Agriculture, MBA (Agribusiness), M.Tech, or higher research degrees such as Ph.D. Higher studies not only deepen your expertise in a specialized field but also open doors to careers as scientists, researchers, professors, and subject matter specialists.

M.Sc. Agriculture

MSc Agriculture is the most natural academic progression after BSc Agriculture. It is best suited for students who are deeply passionate about their subject, want to gain in-depth, specialized knowledge, and wish to build a career in research & development, teaching, or scientific roles. An MSc also opens the door to higher government positions and PhD opportunities. It is a 2-year postgraduate program where you choose a specific discipline.

2 YEARS • RESEARCH & TEACHING

MBA (Agribusiness Management)

If you're someone who finds the business and management side of agriculture more exciting than the technical side, an MBA is a powerful option. An MBA is best suited for students who want to enter the corporate and private sector with professional business knowledge — covering areas like marketing, supply chain, finance, and strategy. It opens doors to leadership and management roles in agribusiness companies, food corporations, and agricultural startups.

2 YEARS • CORPORATE & LEADERSHIP

Abroad Studies (MSc / PhD)

Studying abroad is an exciting option for students who want to explore and experience advanced agricultural technologies that are not yet widely available in India. It gives you exposure to cutting-edge research, global agricultural practices, and world-class academic environments — all of which significantly strengthen your professional profile and make you highly competitive in the global private sector.

GLOBAL • RESEARCH EXPOSURE

Note on abroad studies: if you plan to return to India and pursue a government job after studying abroad, you will still need to compete on equal footing with other Indian candidates in the respective government examinations. Abroad studies does not provide any special advantage in Indian government recruitment.[cite: 1]

M.SC. DEEP DIVE

M.Sc. subjects and their eligibility

Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Agriculture is a two-year postgraduate degree that allows students to specialize in a specific discipline of agriculture after completing their B.Sc. Agriculture. Unlike undergraduate studies, which provide a broad understanding of various agricultural sciences, M.Sc. focuses on developing advanced subject knowledge, research skills, analytical thinking, and practical expertise in a chosen field.

DEPARTMENT CHOICE

Which department should you choose?

There are 26-30 departments under M.Sc. Agriculture and no department is genuinely bad. The decision comes down to one distinction: major subjects vs minor subjects.

CRITERIA
MAJOR SUBJECTS
MINOR SUBJECTS
Scope
Broader, more career options
Niche, limited but specific options
Competition
Higher number of students competing
Comparatively lower competition
Job Opportunities
More vacancies across govt & private sectors
Fewer vacancies, but specialized roles
Safer Choice?
✅ Yes, recommended for most students
Only if you have a strong specific interest
Departments
Genetics & Plant Breeding, Plant Pathology, Agronomy, Soil Science, Entomology, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Extension, Horticulture — Vegetable Science, Horticulture — Fruit Science
Microbiology, Seed Science & Technology, Plant Genetic Resources, Sericulture, Water Science & Technology, Agricultural Chemistry, Agricultural Physics, Floriculture, Post-Harvest Technology

Want flexibility?

Go for a major subject — broader scope, more vacancies, safer job prospects.

Have a niche passion?

A minor subject can still be deeply rewarding, with lower competition and specialised roles.

📌Coming Up Next: Once you've chosen your MSc department, the next big step is knowing which competitive exams you'll be eligible for — we've covered that in a detailed table ahead!
