ICAR IIMR supported a Millet Primary Processing Unit-cum-Custom Hiring Centre at Killoguda, Andhra Pradesh, giving tribal farmers shared access to machinery for cleaning, dehulling and grading millets (ICAR, 2025).

3. Powering Agro-Processing Through Innovation: The ICAR–CIAE Journey

“Behind every better-processed harvest is an idea that dared to solve a real problem”

India has long been one of the world's largest producers of agricultural commodities, yet a considerable share of its harvest has traditionally been lost after production because of inadequate processing and post-harvest management. Recognizing this challenge, the Agro Processing Division of the ICAR Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering (ICAR-CIAE), Bhopal, embarked on a mission to transform agricultural engineering research into practical technologies that could reduce losses, enhance value addition, and improve farmers' livelihoods.

Over the years, the institute developed around 100 agro-processing technologies for cereals, pulses, oilseeds, millets, fruits, and vegetables, addressing critical needs across the agricultural value chain.

The true success of ICAR CIAE lies in translating research into real-world impact. Around 45 of its technologies have been licensed to more than 75 manufacturers and industries, enabling their commercial adoption across the country. Technologies such as the Cleaner-cum-Grader, Mini Dal Mill, and Millet Mill have significantly reduced post-harvest losses while improving processing efficiency and value addition. An impact assessment conducted during 2012–2023 estimated that 19 ICAR CIAE technologies generated an annual national benefit of ₹14,070.91 crore. By combining innovation, technology commercialization, entrepreneurship development, and capacity building, ICAR CIAE has demonstrated how engineering research can create lasting economic and social benefits, making it a remarkable success story in India's agro-processing sector.

4. Green Vision – From Waste to a Growing Enterprise

“A simple agricultural idea, when supported by knowledge and persistence, can grow into a successful rural business”

Imagine starting a business with just 25 vermicompost beds. That is how the journey of Shri Subash Chander and Shri Rishi Kumar began in Rajasthan. Both had worked as marketing representatives in a private agri-input company, but in 2011 they decided to leave their jobs and start their own vermicompost enterprise. In the beginning, they produced about 125 tonnes of vermicompost a year.

Their turning point came through scientific training from KVK Hanumangarh-I. They improved their production methods and later added vermi-wash and earthworm multiplication to their business. As demand increased, the enterprise expanded its production capacity and eventually launched the brand “Green Vision” in 2022 after obtaining the required manufacturing and marketing licences.

The small beginning became a much larger enterprise. During 2024–25, Green Vision produced 1,770 tonnes of vermicompost, while its annual turnover grew to more than ₹70 lakh. The enterprise has also supported the organic transition of more than 1,000 farmers and currently provides employment to more than a dozen rural youth. What began with a few vermicompost beds has grown into an enterprise linking scientific knowledge, organic farming and rural entrepreneurship.

5. Siddu and Shankara – When Jackfruit Became an Opportunity

“Protecting a unique agricultural resource can also create a valuable livelihood”

Sometimes, an opportunity is already growing in a farmer's field we simply need to recognize its value. In Karnataka, farmers conserved two special jackfruit varieties known as Siddu and Shankara, with attractive coppery-red flakes. ICAR–Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (ICAR-IIHR) studied these farmer-conserved varieties and supported their recognition and propagation. Both varieties were officially registered under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPV&FRA) in 2023.

The story then moved from conservation to entrepreneurship. K. S. Ashok Kumar of Doddaballapur adopted Siddu and Shankara on 10 acres of dryland farming. Within four years, he achieved yields of 10.5 tonnes of Siddu and 9.87 tonnes of Shankara, generating net annual returns of ₹7.90 lakh per acre. He also developed value-added products such as jackfruit halwa, payasam, burrito, kathi roll, biryani and Manchurian, creating additional avenues for income.

This shows that agriculture is not only about growing a crop. Biodiversity itself can become an economic opportunity when farmers, scientists and institutions work together. The Siddu–Shankara journey connects genetic-resource conservation, scientific support, value addition and entrepreneurship in one model.

6. Gaurav Maurya – From Grafted Vegetables to Entrepreneurship

“Scientific training can open the door to both better farming and entrepreneurship”

For Gaurav Maurya, a farmer from Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, the journey began with learning a new technique. After receiving training and technical guidance from ICAR Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (ICAR-IIVR), he adopted grafted brinjal cultivation on a commercial scale. In April 2023, he planted grafted hybrid brinjal seedlings using Solanum torvum as the rootstock.

The results encouraged him to think beyond his own field. His crop produced about 112 quintals of brinjal, giving him a net profit of ₹2.27 lakh. Seeing the potential of grafting technology, he expanded into the production of grafted vegetable seedlings. In the following year, he produced and sold nearly 75,000 grafted tomato and brinjal seedlings, earning a net profit of ₹3.37 lakh.

His enterprise continued to grow. With support from the State Government, he established a Hi-Tech Polyhouse worth approximately ₹14 lakh. His nursery activities also created employment opportunities for local youth and farm women in grafting, nursery management and seedling marketing. Gaurav Maurya's shows how a farmer can move from learning a technology to using it, and then turning that knowledge into a business.
